8 Tips For A Successful Vacation + My Bucket List

Hey! Where are the globetrotters?

Summer will be here in no distant time. What’s in your travel bucket list?

I have planned some travelling this year, both locally and internationally and i can’t wait to start checking off on them. My birthday comes up on July 6th and i hope to mark it in Dubai for a couple of weeks. I have heard so much about the Calabar Festival that happens from December 1 – December 31st every year but i never had the chance to attend due to work schedule, etc but thankfully my family and I got invited to an all-expense paid stay during the Festival. I won’t trade that for anything so, i’m adjusting my leave plan to fit in a 5-day stay in Calabar, Cross Rivers State, Nigeria and other locally exciting vacation + leisure spots in the year. I just can’t wait to share the experience with you.

Travel when done right can be an amazing experience, one that leaves you reminiscing just like this vacation of mine but when done wrong can leave terrible scars in your memory box. So, keep these 8 tips for a successful vacation of your life:

schedulePlan your itinerary

Once you have chosen your vacation spot, you can start with your planning. When will you be traveling, where do you want to stay; in a hotel or with a friend/family and for how long. Are you traveling alone or in a company of friends. Use the internet or a travel agent to monitor flight deals and book when the price is within your budget. Contact the hotel you may want to stay in and book for at least a few days from your arrival date to enable you settle in and then possibly check in at other destinations of yours. Also contact family member(s) or friend you plan staying with to make appropriate stay arrangement to avoid last minute hassles. Ensure you provide your company with adequate notice to avoid any gap in communication which might affect your travel schedule and that your work load is appropriately assigned.

budget-travelSave up for the trip:

The key to any trip is being smart with your money even before you hit the road. It’s important to know how to save and plan for your trip so you don’t find yourself running out of money on your trip. I am not a financial guru but i know that saving for your trip is a smart way to a successful vacation. You may need to set aside a portion of your earning every month for vacation and stick to it. Forgo any extra expense or splurge or take up extra job different from your normal job to save up. It might take months of savings, but hey, at least you are going somewhere.

exploredestinationbigResearch about your destination

You will need to find out almost everything about the country of visit, from the appropriate clothing to the type of transportation, laws, weather, economy and socio-cultural behavior even to lifestyles and food choices. These information will help in your choice of clothing, how much money to carry along, events and places to visit which will eventually be the highlight of your stay. With that being said, while doing your research, think about where you are going, what you need to take with you, and how you will travel from place to place to avoid culture shock.

Starting early to put things in your travel bag will save you from the panic attack that comes with packing. Knowing that you will end up buying new stuffs especially clothing from your trip is enough reason to pack light and avoid paying so much on extra luggage. Also, packing light does not necessarily mean only packing shorts and t-shirts, but more so pack for only a few day’s worth of clothing that you can alternate, wash and re-wear. While packing, keep at the back of your mind; ”comfort and safety”. Invest in good, comfortable, supportive and stylish shoes that are made for walking. Remember that hurting your feet while on vacation is not only painful, but prevents you from exploring your surroundings.

Group Of Friends Having Fun Together OutdoorsReconnect with people

I am not a solo traveler. I know some people enjoy solo trips and that it has it’s own good sides but for me travelling is a form of re-connection with family, old friends or an opportunity to make new ones, learn new things and have loads of experiences.

In as much as you will want to plan your vacation and places to visit while you are away. Do not stick to routine! Explore your environment; visit local markets, historic places, try something new such as new cuisine or local meals, attend local festivals or activities. These experience will form the highlight of your travel and will allow you to see things you may not have seen or known before.

Whatever is your purpose for embarking on a vacation, ensure that it is achieved. Move away from any and every form of distraction that may try to get in the way of your relaxation and fun. Use the opportunity to relax, reflect on where you are headed and recharge for the task ahead. Focus on the moment for it is yours to savor!

Remember to capture every moment in photos or make interesting videos that you will share with friends and family just like i promised.

Salient points you brought up Nkem. But in my journeys across the globe, one thing I have kept in mind is never to carry all my money ( especially if it’s cash) in one place when taking adventures. It’s never safe and you don’t want to be stuck.
Secondly, Always hold a valid means of identification at all times when you are out and about town exploring, you never know when it might come in handy.
Finally I always carry a Messenger Bag (A bag with a long strap to be worn across the body that winds around the chest resting the bag on the lower back) but I swing it around to rest across my lower stomach. It comes in handy for essential things I need for any adventure.
Have fun on your trip Nkem and can’t wait to hear all about it
